I don't know exactly what Sonarworks has done in their algorithm, all I can say is that for me, it is working very well when paired with my existing treatment. I know that some acousticians will say that EQ is not the answer, but in this case I disagree. As someone else here has said, I think that this software even when used with modestly priced (but decent) monitors makes a really good combination. I would like to note that I do my work on reasonably priced monitors. I have a lot of plugins that I really like, but I think that this is the one that has increased my confidence in my mixes the most. I have more confidence in my mixes now, and this is attested to because they are translating markedly better, without having to create so many "coasters." The sweet spot created in my room is not enormous, but it is definitely usable.

This bodes well for your own mixes as well. Referencing some commercial mixes is now a revelation when you can hear all the care and detail that was put into them. No, the room is not now magically flat, but both listening and measuring confirms a big difference. Having installed Reference 3 and conducting the measurements (which is fairly straightforward) there is a large improvement. This netted me some significant improvements, but I also still had significant problems. I treated the room myself with DIY absorbers using 2" Roxul RHT80 with wall spacing for bass traps (3" is better,) and some Auralex products for the higher frequencies, including reflection zone treatment. I have a smaller room with bass problems and MF & HF problems as well. I am uncomfortable in writing over-the-top assessments, but in this case I think I can honestly say that I am very impressed. I have been using the Reference 3 studio calibration software for monitor calibration for approximately two months.
